Bupa Arabia: Deep Dive

A very good business at a price that assumes the good years are normal.

The short version

Bupa Arabia is the cleanest health insurer on the Saudi market. It sells only medical cover. It has never posted a loss year since listing in 2008. It has the biggest share of health premiums, a premium per member about 1.7x the market average and a partner, Bupa Group, that has quietly bought up to 43.25% of the shares.

The market pays for all of that. At SAR 139.00 (29 Oct 2026 close) the stock trades at 19.2x 2025 earnings and 3.7x book. That price needs Bupa to earn about a 30% return on equity for good. Its ROE has ranged from 15.5% to 26.7% since 2016, about 20% on average.

The edge in this story is in the accounts, not the brand. Three facts stand out.

  1. 2025 underwriting profit came from old reserves. Bupa released SAR 1,162m of prior-year claim reserves in 2025. Its whole net insurance service result was SAR 877m. Take out the releases and the 2025 book lost about SAR 240m. The company's own profit bridge does not show the releases.

  2. Investment income is now over half of pre-tax profit. It was 53% in 2025 on Bupa's own measure, up from 42% in 2023. A rate cut hits earnings directly.

  3. Tawuniya is catching up. The health share gap shrank from 19 points in 2019 to 7 points in 2025. Tawuniya made more net profit than Bupa in 2025, the first time since 2016. On trailing 12-month profit Bupa is back ahead.

Key numbers

  • Market cap SAR 20.85bn. P/E 19.2x on 2025 EPS of SAR 7.23. P/B 3.7x on June 2026 equity.

  • Dividend SAR 4.00 a share, flat for three years. Yield 2.9%.

  • H1-26 net profit SAR 694m, +4%. Q3-26 results are not out yet. They are due in early November (reported dates range from 3 to 5 November).

  • Model value per share: base SAR 94.2, upside 145.8, downside 37.8. Probability-weighted SAR 93.0, 33% below the price.

My view: a very good business at a price that assumes the good years are normal. The stock works if Bupa reprices its corporate book fast enough to replace the reserve releases. It does not work if 2025 was the start of a softer cycle.
